University of Colorado-Bouldern Named #1 Green University in the Nation

University of Colorado-Boulder Named #1 Green University in the Nation

By Michael Hughes     December 21, 2009

Boulder has coveted the top “green” University in the nation this year from Sierra Magazine in their 2009 September/October edition. In 2008 they came in second.  They had to run the hurdles of sustainability; efficiency, energy, food, purchasing, transportation and waste management.   Boulder was strongest in transportation and waste management.  This award was given to the university by Sierra Magazine the magazine of the “club” with the same name.  This group is the nation’s oldest and largest environmental watch dog.   The environmental center at CU-Boulder was started in 1970 and has manifested the student bus pass program, the ski bus, the free bike share program and the use of biofuels in university vehicles.  The award rises like a phoenix out of the numerous partnerships, smart policies, sustainability and co-creative team work.  Colorado will also be home to the new ConocoPhillips (who has partnered with CU) Alternative Energy Campus in Louisville, Co. Boasting 450 acres and around 7,000 workers when all is said and done.

The Boulder campus of the University is also number one in the nation for publication of scientific and environmental research.  The University is one of the nations’ top three universities in receiving funding for environmental projects.  CU shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore for their report on Climate change.  “Ralphies Green Stampede” initiative transformed Folsom Field into a zero-waste facility in 2008.   CU Boulder on the cutting edge and  leading  the Green Movement in Boulder and beyond.  An A+ for the University of Colorado-Boulder.  For more information on CU Boulders sustainability programs go to www.colorado.edu/news/reports/sustainability and www.colorado.edu/sustainability.

Interesting stuff. Ratings and rankings always have to be taken with a lot of caution though. Nevertheless, universities must lead the way in terms of sustainability education – and practice. I run a theme page on this over at the sustainable futures blog – would be great to get your feedback.
